We woke up to sunny skies on our first full day on St. George Island. No long drives or special events to attend, just a slow pace as we spend the next three days on this beautiful spit of sand. Breakfast was simple; OJ, coffee, Cherios & blackberries.
As I made our coffee, I was visited by three different cotton rats, which are indigenous to this island. They are herbivores and the ranger assured me they are no threat to humans; they don't spread disease. They are about the size of a hamster.
Joni and I spent our morning walking on the beach. As you can see in these photos, the beaches aren't crowded, and the water is very warm. I didn't pack a bathing suit! Tomorrow I'm going swimming!
Unlike Cape Cod beaches, there are no shark warnings here...but there are stingray warnings! The recommendation to shuffle feet won't be a problem, after my back surgeries I've mastered the shuffle!
After our walk we headed into Apalachacola to make a few purchases, bathing suit, water, gas, propane, etc.} and have lunch. "Up the Creek" is worth the drive from Cape Cod; our favorite raw bar with a view to die for.
Returning to our campsite, we relaxed and enjoyed nature. Dinner was simple, left over pizza and black and tans.

Up The Creek is the best. Betsey and I almost ate them out of oysters when we were staying between Post St. Joe and Apalachicola. Makes my mouth water to see your pics.
ReplyDeleteTough to beat Up the Creek!
DeleteLooks beautiful. I do have a friend who was bitten by a stingray on the west coast. The doctors in Westchester really didn't know much about treating the bite.
ReplyDeleteThey are deadly, fortunately I didn't see any, and I was looking.
DeleteI sure would love to walk the beach, feet in the water. Lovely. /S
ReplyDeleteIt's great sand for walking. Nice, firm, level, and not crowded.
DeleteI think it's do the hustle, not the shuffle.. The 70's. Do they bite or sting ?
ReplyDeleteI think they sting you with their tale, remember, that's how Steve Irwin died.
DeleteIt’s always something! Gilda
