Day 10 Traveling to St. George Island

A travel day for us, our destination for today is the St. George Island in the Florida Panhandle.  It’s a 337 mile drive, so we didn't meet our 330 rule, but that’s OK.

After coffee and cereal at our campsite we w ere on the road by 8:45 AM.  Joni and I both agree that the Skidaway Island State Park campground is one of the nicest that we’ve visited.  The scenery, privacy, cleanliness of bathroom facilities are all a 10.

For the most part we avoid interstate highways as much as possible, as we followed a diagonal path of Georgia state roads toward Florida.  Our first stop was just after noon in Valdosta, and we were ecstatic to find a Steak-n-Shake.  Cheeseburgers, fries, and vanilla shakes were our choice, and they met our expectations.

On our way out of Valdosta we were held up for quite a while by a very long freight train which was hauling coal.  One of the benefits of avoiding interstate highways.

Continuing on we arrived at our campsite at the Dr. Julian Bruce State Park on St. George Island just after 5:00 PM.

To get to St. George, you have to cross a very long causeway bridge.  There was a day when such a crossing would not have be fun for me, but fortunately those days have passed.

We have this site reserved for two nights and we have another 2 night reservation at Ochlockonee River State Park.  We booked these sites in early October, but were not able to reserve one site for 4 nights in a row even that far in advance. Camping along Florida’s coast is obviously popular!

This is our 5th visit  to the Redneck Riviera in the last six years; we love it.

We relaxed at our campsite for a bit before heading to Port St. Joe for dinner at “Joe Mama's” for pizza.  It was delicious.
