Day 3 Cape Henlopen

Slept especially well last considering it was my first night in the van since my second spinal fusion last August.   Our Bob-O-Pedic mattress comes through again.  It was 55° in the van and 50° outside; so we’ve driven about 450 miles south and the morning temps have only rise +2°.  That calls for a morning campfire!

Fresh coffee and Marvels donuts were our breakfast for the day.  We were both still full from our delicious dinner at Matt’s Fish Camp, no need for bacon and eggs this morning, but who doesn’t love that smell when camping?

Thoroughly enjoying a slow start to our morning, we eventually left the campground around 11 AM, and headed for the local Home Depot in Lewes to purchase a few items.  No camping trip would be complete without a trip to a hardware store, and this was no exception.  For the extremely curious we came up with a new way to store the window shades that we only occasionally use for insulation or privacy.  Our innovation is not photo worthy, but we were both very pleased with the outcome.

Leaving Home Depot around noon we headed to ‘The Station on Kings”, a café, bakery, & garden store, for lunch.  We shared onion soup, quiche, and a small salad.   All were exceptionally tasty.

After lunch we stopped in downtown Lewes for some brief window shopping and ice cream, and then parked along the harbor next to the “Overfalls”, a restored lightship that has been decommissioned.  Lightships were used from 1820 to 1983 to guide mariners along treacherous sections of the sea coast in areas that were too difficult to construct a lighthouse.  This particular lightship has been designated as a National Historical Landmark.

Leaving downtown Lewes, we returned to Cape Henlopen State Park, bundled up in our down jackets and walked out on the fish pier.  Although it was a beautiful day, it was very chilly, so we enjoyed having the fishing pier to ourselves.

From the fishing pier we headed to our campsite, took a brief nap, and then returned to the ferry dock where we greeted our dear friends Rosemary and Bill who were arriving on the 2:30 boat from Cape May.  They are not camping, but we will be spending the next five days with them exploring the DelMarVa coast.

Dinner was at the Cape Henlopen Oyster House in Rehoboth Beach.  All four of us had eaten there before so it was an easy choice.  Bill and I started with a raw oyster sampler that included  eight oyster from Maine, Massachusetts, Delaware, and Maryland!  They were very good.  For our main course three of us enjoyed soft shell crabs and Joni loved her lobster roll.  I fine French Rose accompanied our meal, and for dessert the four of us shared a slice of Key lime pie.
